Chapter 20

Chris had spent Wednesday night and most of Thursday inside Ruth’s house. The bathroom door was closed, and the windows were open, yet the toxic smell of acid and decomposing flesh was nauseating as well as dangerous to breathe. The odor permeated the house.

A towel helped block some of the stench when Chris stepped into the bathroom to take a look. The slut hadn’t dissolved as quickly as Chris had hoped. Looking down at the sludge and spongy bone fragments remaining in the tub, Chris wondered how to get Ruth out of there.

Damn it, I should have done better research or dumped her last night before she turned into a pile of goo. I’m not in the mood to deal with this, and I don’t have a way to scoop her out of that bathtub anyway.

It was late in the day—suppertime, actually—just like yesterday when Chris arrived and lay in wait to blindside Ruth. Now a decision had to be made—leave Ruth in the tub, where she could be immediately identified, or figure out how to remove her and dump the remains somewhere else.

Chris paced in indecision, trying to figure out the best option.

What is my end goal? I know what I still have to do, but am I willing to go to prison for life, be killed by the cops, or is it my intent to get away scot-free? Can Ruth be connected to anyone else I’ve killed or to the last one on the list? It would take forever, if the cops are even that good, to make the connection. I’m leaving the bitch right where she is, and I need to get out of here before someone complains about the smell.

Leaving Ruth in the tub meant Chris had to wipe down every surface that had been touched, remove the empty jugs from the home, and lock up as if nobody had ever been there. The best time was at that very moment, when most people were enjoying supper. Chris got busy and made sure to put everything in the box the jug of acid had been placed in yesterday. Nothing would go in Ruth’s trash can since that was the first place cops usually looked.

A half hour later, after doing a final walkthrough of each room and pocketing Ruth’s phone, Chris took the box, put on the tan ball cap, twisted the lock on the inside knob, and walked out of the front door. The car was still around the corner, and it was time to go. Chris stepped out of the screened porch, looked both ways, then headed down the sidewalk.

Taking Ruth’s phone could buy an extra day or so. Luckily, nobody had stopped by or called while Chris was at the house.

“So far, so good, and I’m saving the best for last.”
